Protect how your product looks

The Industrial Design Act, 2023 gave Bangladesh a standalone, modern law for product designs, replacing the old Patents and Designs Act, 1911 framework. Designs are registered at the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT).

Registration is valuable wherever products are easy to copy on sight: furniture, ceramics, electronics, textiles, footwear, packaging and FMCG containers. A registered design makes it far easier to stop look-alikes in shops and online marketplaces.

Registration process

  1. Novelty checkWe review the design against what is already known and advise whether it is registrable, ideally before any public launch.
  2. RepresentationsWe prepare clear drawings or photographs showing the design from the required views, and identify the Locarno class.
  3. FilingWe file at DPDT with the statement of novelty and, for foreign applicants, any Paris Convention priority claim (6 months for designs).
  4. Examination & registrationWe respond to any objections, and the design is registered and published.
  5. RenewalWe track renewals to keep the design in force up to the 15-year maximum.

Launching soon? File first, then show the product. Posting it on social media or at a trade fair before filing can cost you the right to register it.

FAQ

Design questions

What does an industrial design registration protect?
The visual appearance of a product: its shape, configuration, pattern or ornamentation. It does not protect how the product works; that is a matter for patents.
How long does design protection last?
Under the Industrial Design Act, 2023, protection is granted for an initial five years and can be extended by renewal up to a maximum of fifteen years.
I have already shown the design at a fair or online. Can I still register?
Prior public disclosure can destroy novelty. File before launch whenever possible. If the design has already been shown, contact us promptly so we can assess the position.
Should I register a design or a trademark for product packaging?
Often both. A design registration protects the look of the packaging or product shape; a trademark protects the brand name and logo used on it. We advise on the right combination.
