Copyright protection under the Copyright Act, 2023

Bangladesh's Copyright Act, 2023 replaced the Copyright Act, 2000. It protects original literary, artistic, musical and dramatic works, films, sound recordings and computer software, and adds stronger anti-piracy measures. Registration is handled by the Copyright Office.

Copyright arises automatically, but a registration certificate is what platforms, courts and licensees ask for when ownership is challenged. We register works for authors, publishers, software companies, agencies and content creators.

What you can register

  • Books, articles, research and course material
  • Software, mobile apps and websites
  • Logos, artwork, illustrations and photographs
  • Music, lyrics and sound recordings
  • Films, videos and animation
  • Advertising creatives and campaign material

How registration works

  1. Ownership reviewWe confirm who the author and owner are and check employment, freelance or agency agreements, so the right person is registered.
  2. ApplicationWe prepare the application and statements, together with copies of the work in the required form.
  3. Filing & objections periodWe file with the Copyright Office and respond to any queries or third-party objections.
  4. CertificateThe work is entered in the Register of Copyrights and the certificate is issued.

Enforcing your copyright

Online copying is the most common problem we see: re-uploaded videos, cloned apps, copied product photos and pirated books. Depending on the case we use platform takedown notices, cease-and-desist letters, civil suits for injunctions and damages, and criminal complaints for commercial piracy.

FAQ

Copyright questions

Do I need to register copyright to own it?
No. Copyright exists automatically once an original work is created. Registration with the Copyright Office is voluntary, but the registration certificate is strong evidence of ownership and authorship, which makes disputes, takedowns and licensing far easier.
Can software and mobile apps be registered?
Yes. Computer programs are protected as literary works. We register software, apps and websites, and advise on what to deposit so your source code stays confidential where possible.
Who owns work made by employees or freelancers?
Ownership depends on the employment relationship and the contract. Freelance and agency work in particular needs a written assignment. Registration does not cure a defective contract, so we review agreements as part of the process.
Which law applies?
The Copyright Act, 2023, which replaced the Copyright Act, 2000. Matters started under the old Act continue under its transitional provisions.
Is a brand name or logo protected by copyright?
A logo can be an artistic work, but the brand itself is protected by trademark registration at DPDT. Most businesses need both. See trademark registration.
